:- 5.0 out of 5 stars from diana kelly -- Read this book. Everyone should STOP what they are doing and read this book. : This book is tragic, and beautiful. It’s hard for me to find a book that will literally move me to tears and in the flip of a page make me want to throw it against the wall. ( Reviewed in the United States on June 25, 2021 )
- 5.0 out of 5 stars from Eva Snowden -- Accurate Book About Our Community! : I lived my life here in Austin, Indiana. The message of hope and community support. Although we pre-ordered the actual book, I wanted the audio version because I prefer listening to a book. I listened to this book twice already. I was pleasantly surprised to hear the resilient stories about individuals in our community. Our H2O story and other street ministries have been included in chapter 18 to our surprise!! I could see this being used as a resource reading in social work classes. I could also see this used as a church small group discussion book. I am excited to see the lives challenged from this book and the individuals helped as a result. ( Reviewed in the United States on June 22, 2021 )
- 5.0 out of 5 stars from Dr. Carrie Foote -- Informative, powerful and inspiring book! : From the time I started reading, I could not put this down. This is a very powerful and immensely moving must read for anyone working to end the syndemics of opioid use disorder, poverty, and the HIV/HCV epidemics among people who inject drugs in rural America. I teach a course on the Social Dimensions of HIV and this would also be an excellent book to assign to students as its very readable and filled with history, and social explanations of the public health crisis that happened among people living with HIV in southern Indiana. It shows the power of the human spirit and our ability to care and how that caring truly does make a difference despite all odds. Highly recommend! ( Reviewed in the United States on June 24, 2021 )
- 4.0 out of 5 stars from K. Laura -- A "must read" for 2021 : This book does an amazing job of humanizing a population of people who are often treated as "less than." The story of Austin and how the situation became so dire was interesting and at the same time so sadly predictable. Cooke weaves his strong faith throughout this story and at times conversations and scenes seem a little contrived, but you can tell he has a huge heart and has dedicated his life to this cause. I highly recommend this book to anyone who works in social services, addiction & recovery, the foster care system, etc. or anyone looking to deepen their understanding of our broken system of addiction treatment in America. - 5.0 out of 5 stars from J. Mosby -- A story of compassion and hope that we can all learn from : This heartfelt account by Dr. Will Cooke is a must read for anyone who has ever been touched by substance misuse or addiction. Dr. Cooke's compassion for others is contagious, and the recovery community in our country needs a million of him! Fortunately, Canary in the Coal Mine provides a roadmap to recovery at the community scale that's accessible to anyone who reads it. Dr. Cooke's strong faith, grit, determination and love of humanity can serve as an example to all of us who aspire to help those less fortunate, and especially those in the throes of addiction. - 5.0 out of 5 stars from Michael Welsh -- The strongest of advocacy by compassionate example : Dr. Cooke has more than "fought the good fight"; he has succeeded despite many hurdles. Will has painfully described the cycle of addiction, poverty, HIV and total life failure from which many patients to do not recover. Second, the pathology of our American health care system is described using the real life experiences of a practicing physician. His example of action and his inspiration for action from us all is inescapable regardless of how one feels about addiction, syringe exchange, HIV, and the provision of healthcare. Addressing healthcare failure in this country is a must if we are to survive. I feel that Dr. Cooke's work should be a must in educational institutions and on policy makers' reading list to even start. ( Reviewed in the United States on July 13, 2021 )
- 5.0 out of 5 stars from Meghan Miller -- Heartfelt and impactful. : I am a family physician in Indianapolis and I am sitting here in tears reading this book. I’m only half way through but it is just singing to me. I work in underserved communities in areas of addiction and hepatitis in addition to full primary care. I also go to church in inner city Indianapolis. I haven’t faced near the scrutiny, backlash and threats Dr Cooke received but I have sat with patients who told me they cannot find a provider to ever treat them like a person with compassion. I am so inspired by this work and can see that I was able to do the work because he paved the way in our state. I kept thinking “there has to be someone in this state that sees patients like Christ would, not just me.” I feel seen by this book. Thank you. ( Reviewed in the United States on September 17, 2021 )
